Join former Vancouver Parks Supervisor, Alex Downie, on a guided walk through the exotic and native trees of Queen Elizabeth Park’s arboretum. Founded in 1949, the arboretum features tree species from around the world. This walk will focus on the ornamental and garden-worthy qualities of Vancouver’s diverse tree palette.

Alex holds a National Diploma in Horticulture, is a Certified Arborist, and lifetime member of the International Dendrological Society. He recently retired from the Vancouver Park Board after a 37-year career during which he held various positions at VanDusen Botanical Garden, Bloedel Conservatory, and Queen Elizabeth Park. He capped his career as the City’s Manager of Park Operations.
Alex is a passionate plantsman and co-wrote the book “The Woodland Garden”, published in 2004. Last fall Alex was hired as a consultant to conduct the first complete inventory of all 3,325 trees growing in the 130-acre Queen Elizabeth Park.
