Congratulations on having your haiku selected as the top winner in the youth category in the Vancouver Cherry Blossom Festival’s 2021 Haiku Invitational contest. How did you first learn about haiku, and how much writing of haiku or other poetry have you done?
I learned about haiku from my father who runs a haiku club. He is the one who initiated me two years ago. Honestly, I don’t write as often as he would like, but there are times when we read haiku poems together or, starting from certain keywords, he urges me to write. Sometimes I do better, other times less well, but he, being a demanding teacher, corrects them and tells me what I need to improve. In addition to haiku, I also write short prose texts related to homework.
What was the inspiration for your winning poem?
One day during the pandemic, my father and I went to one of my favourite parks, but unfortunately the padlock was still on the gate. Instead of children, I noticed sparrows and wind-blown petals having fun where I was playing a few months before. The image deserved, my father said, to be put in a haiku.
Describe the moment when you first learned you had won.
Upon hearing the news that I had won this award, I was of course happy and asked my father, who informed me of my success, what I would receive for it. He showed me my diploma and I was impressed when I saw that it says it was an international competition.
Do you have favourite books or websites relating to haiku that others might benefit from in order to learn haiku as a literary art and to share one’s haiku?
I’m too young to know much about haiku. I am an apprentice. For now, I read what my father gives me, sometimes with him. He has lots of information and books and I hope to write just as well in the future.
Please tell us more about yourself.
I am nine years old, I am a Sagittarius, and I study at a middle school in a city in northeastern Romania, the place where the national poet Mihai Eminescu was born some time ago. I have an older brother who is studying medicine, and our family owns three pets: a dog, a cat and a hamster. I like to do sports, travel, read books, and play with my friends.
How does where you live and what you enjoy doing affect the way you write haiku?
The fact that I love nature and animals a lot and that I want to understand them helps me, I think, to write these little poems.

Felicitări pentru faptul că haiku-ul tău a fost selectat drept câștigător la categoria Tineret, la Concursul de haiku din cadrul Festivalului “Floare de cireș”, Vancouver, 2021. Cum ai aflat prima oară despre haiku și cât de mult scrii haiku sau alte poezii?
Am aflat despre haiku de la tatăl meu care conduce un club de haiku. El este cel care m-a inițiat acum 2 ani. Sincer, nu scriu atât de des pe cât și-ar dori el, dar sunt momente când citim împreună poezii haiku sau, pornind de la anumite cuvinte cheie, mă îndeamnă să scriu. Uneori mă descurc mai bine, alteori mai puțin bine, dar el, fiind profesor exigent, le corectează și îmi spune ce trebuie să îmbunătățesc. În afară de haiku, mai scriu texte scurte în proză care au legătură cu temele date la școală.
Ce anume te-a inspirat în scrierea acestui poem câștigător?
Într-o zi din pandemie m-am dus cu tata la unul din parcurile mele preferate, dar din păcate lacătul era încă pe poartă. În locul copiilor am observat vrăbiuțe și petale luate de vânt care se distrau acolo unde mă jucam și eu cu câteva luni înainte. Imaginea merită, a spus tata, să fie pusă într-un haiku.
Descrie momentul în care ai aflat pentru prima dată că ai câștigat.
La aflarea veștii că am câștigat acest premiu, m-am bucurat desigur și l-am întrebat pe tata, care m-a anunțat de reușita mea, ce voi primi pentru asta. Mi-a arătat diploma și am rămas impresionat când am văzut că scrie că este vorba de un concurs internațional.
Ai cărți preferate sau site-uri web referitoare la haiku de care ar putea beneficia și alții pentru a învăța haiku-ul ca artă literară și pentru a-l împărtăși?
Vă dați seama că sunt prea tânăr pentru a ști prea multe despre haiku. Sunt ucenic. Deocamdată citesc ce îmi dă tatăl meu, uneori cu el, că are suficiente informații și cărți și sper să scriu la fel de bine în viitor.
Te rugăm să ne spui mai multe despre tine.
Am 9 ani, sunt Săgetător și studiez la o școală gimnazială dintr-un oraș din nord-estul României, locul în care s-a născut poetul național Mihai Eminescu în urmă cu ceva timp. Am un frate mai mare care studiază medicina, iar familia noastră deține trei animale de companie, un câine, o pisică și un hamster. Îmi place să fac sport, să călătoresc, să citesc cărți și să mă joc cu prietenii mei.
Cum influențează locul în care trăiești și ceea ce-ți place să faci felul în care scrii haiku?
Faptul că iubesc mult natura și animalele, că vreau să le înțeleg cred că mă ajută să scriu aceste mici poezii.
