Choshu-hizakura’ (Choshu red cherry). A Sato-zakura with a broad, fountain-like habit and striking purple-red new growth that initially accompanies the flowers in late April. The individual flowers are about 4 cm across, white, suffused pink, mostly single with an occasional extra petal or petaloid.  ‘Choshu-hizakura’ is exceptionally beautiful, but an extremely rare tree locally. Only a single plant (on private property) is known in Vancouver.
