Cherry Care
Here are some key cherry care tips as recommended by Douglas Justice:
  1. A circle on the ground approximately equal to the diameter of the canopy of branches should be kept clear of grass, weeds or other plants. Use a thin layer of shredded leaves (leaf mould) or aged compost as a mulch in this circle. This will help prevent weed growth, improve moisture retention and add fertility to the soil.
  2.
  3. Cherries appreciate summer irrigation, especially during establishment and periods of drought. Wilted or yellowing leaves during hot weather indicate the need for extra irrigation.
  4.
  5. There is no need for extraordinary pampering once the plant is established. Cherries are strong, healthy growers as long as there is adequate summer moisture and sufficient space around the crown. Don't allow plants or structures to rub on the cherry tree in the wind, and make sure the trunk and branches are protected from contact with vehicles or equipment. Cherries have thin bark that is easily damaged by bumping by lawnmowers or the lashing of string trimmers. Remember that flowering increases with age, sun exposure and health, and a healthy cherry will give many years of pleasure.
