Buy your Birthday Blossoms

Cherry Tree Early & Save

The Vancouver Cherry Blossom Festival 2011 Community Tree Planting Initiative is delighted to offer you the special opportunity to reserve your ornamental cherry tree.

gardenworks

The David and Dorothy Lam Foundation and the Vancouver Cherry Blossom Festival are offering you participation in beautifying our city in time for Vancouver’s 125th Birthday on April 6, 2011. Get involved in planting these 3,000 cherry trees all over the city on private property, school grounds and company lawns, adding to the blossoming beauty that is Vancouver.  To quote our Blossom Benefactor, the Honourable Dr. David C. Lam’s belief, “the cherry tree brings joy; one’s enjoyment of it brings invisible wealth.”

An ornamental cherry tree, valued in excess of $75, is yours for the Special Offer Price of $40, until supplies last.  Proceeds will help support the Vancouver Cherry Blossom Festival, a charitable non- profit society dedicated to the education, celebration and preservation of the 38,000 cherry trees that help make our city unique, attracting admirers from around the world.

As supplies are limited, reserve your flowering cherry tree early to avoid disappointment. The trees are growing beautifully now in the Nursery and will be available for pick up from select GardenWorks locations and VanDusen Botanical Garden the first weekend in April, 2011 when they will be four years old, about six feet tall, well established in five gallon pots and sure to bloom soon after planting.

For more information on how to plant and care for your new Birthday Blossom Cherry Tree, please go to Planting Tips and Cherry Care as recommended by Douglass Justice.

Cultivars For Reservation

   Akebono

Prunus x yedoensis 'Akebono'
The daybreak cherry is a medium sized tree with an upright spreading crown that flowers in March or April, usually follwing the purple-leafed plums. The shell pink to white flowers are produced abundantly. A chance seedling of Tokyo cherry (Prunus x yedoensis ‘Somei-yoshino’), 'Akebono' is noted for its essentially rainproof flowers and freedom from disease. Autumn colour is pumpkin orange.

         Kanzan

Prunus Sato Zakura Group 'Kanzan'
'Kanzan'  is a fast growing cherry with a large, upright spreading crown. The huge, double pink flowers are produced in incredible profusion in late April or May. The leaves emerge bronze green at the same time as the flower buds open. One of the Sato Zakura (village cherries) in cultivation in Japan since the 17th century. Autumn colour is yellow to orange.

        Pendula

Prunus pendula 'Yae-beni-shidare’ - SOLD OUT
'Yae-beni-shidare’ is a double-flowered form of the Japanese Ito-zakura (thread cherry), with flowers in March or April that resemble, as they open, tiny, pendulous pink roses. The habit of this tree is more umbrella-like than many other weeping cultivars and is easily recognized by the long lasting, soft pink, inflated blooms and small stature. Also known as Prunus x subhirtella ‘Pleno-rosea’. Autumn colour is yellow, orange and red.
